The phrase "safe area" is not a concrete thing, but rather subjective to one's opinion, and therefore not a question an agent should be answering. You have to do your own "due diligence" here. Look at crime stats online, and talk to the local police department. You are not or should not be paying anyone any rent now. So why take too much advantage of this. Take the month to save the security deposite, start looking for another place and move. That way you will not be forced to move out when someone shows up at the door.
There is a lot of information that I would need to know before advising you, but I can tell you that if you are in contract and did not use a Realtor, then you need to contact a real estate attorney.
Second thoughts in making the purchase of a home, are as common as breathing. So you are no different than anyone else.
