I live in Lincoln Park. It's a family community and I have had no problem with crime for the year that I've lived here. It is also very quiet at night, much better than the downtown area. The only problem that I've had is some jerk who kept shooting off fireworks at 1 in the morning for THREE nights in a row. But hell, I got that in the suburbs as well.... more
Everyone has a different opinion as to what is "safe" so as Realtors we really can't comment since it can be considered steering. I always advise people to actually visit the area and go to a public place like a restaurant and see what you think for yourself. Chicago is an enormous city, so there is a great diversity in housing choices and people. Personally, that's what I love about living and working here.... more
As many have stated, Brokers can not advise as to whether an area is "safe" or not. In addition to the other resources provided, check out EveryBlock.com. It couldn't hurt to attend the next CAPS meeting.
I'd avoid it were I you. Lots of gang and drug-selling activity in the Howard/Damen area. It's seedy and dangerous. I never, ever walked after nightfall if at all possible, and since parking in this congested area is terrible, it's necessary at times. And "Crystal's" answer to your question is nonsensical and downright inflammatory. This part of Rogers Park is steadily deteriorating, with respect to crime and related issues. I had my condo burglarized AND vandalized in separate incidents, and my car vandalized twice.

Rather than give you the statistics, wouldn't you rather have the source of my information? I use a website called: familywatchdog.com
This website gives me not only crime rates, but locates sexual offenders close to my address. It is a very reliable source, and I recommend it often.... more
I live in Dunning. 25 years. Love it here and highly recomment. Quiet, peaceful, low crime rate. Most crime is residential/garage break-in type. We had our first murder in 20 years. It was husband/wife murder suicide.... more
I love Uptown. I live here, I bought here and I feel safe. I am a single woman who lives with two small dogs and a cat...I use the Red Line frequently. I do not feel any less safe than I did when I lived in River north or on Michigan avenue. This is the city and you have to be aware - no matter what neighborhood you are in.... more
The area falls into the East Hyde Park area, and benefits from the proximity of the lake, transportation to downtown, and the presence of the University of Chicago. I recommend that you visit, you will see that it is a great area and neighborhood.... more
Raw Crime rates, while important, may give misleading information. Some neighborhoods have recently had a financial fraud artist with some assistants or someone who created counterfeit passports who live in that neighborhood. Their crime, while despicable, doesn't really affect the neighborhood but does bump up the raw crime rate.
A good way to look at things is to visit local merchants and see what kind of anti crime measures and devices they have. If they have security bars on the window, that's a bad sign. If they don't, its a good sign.... more
