My dad is a Real Estate Attorney in central Florida and I grew up working in his office - filing, making copies, even sweeping the parking lot. But, I also typed contracts, took dictation and learned the importance of paying attention to detail and superior customer service. After I graduated college he asked me more than once if I wouldn't like to go to law school. It was tempting, but so was the prospect of moving to Miami to enjoy my 20s and perfect my Spanish language degree.
When I earned my Real Estate license at age 25, he was very supportive and even sent me tapes to listen to about how to sell Real Estate and work with customers. A few years later, my father opened his own title company. It was great to be able to give my customers and friends the option of also working with my dad!
We've been doing business together now for several years. Even if we aren't having a closing at his office, he is always willing to listen to my questions and give advice. He has even assisted some of my customers with other real estate issues like trusts and escrow disputes. Though he is extremely busy with his practice, he is never too busy to make time for me and my customers, friends and family.
Having the support of my father (and mother, sister, etc.) has been a real blessing. I'm so grateful to have my father as such a wonderful example - not only in the ethical, honorable and intelligent ways to do business, but also when it comes to giving back to the community, to conservation and taking care of the earth, generosity with others, how to have fun & laugh, and how to lead a life of good character. I'm proud of my dad for being a STAND OUT in his profession and in our lives, and I hope he has a wonderful Father's Day!
Thanks Joe for offering up this question - it was nice to ponder and reflect!... more
