Remember that regardless of what is predetermined, it is all relative. Everyone has a different barometer by which they measure safety. The FBI's Uniform Crime Report is helpful as this will show you the amount of crime, of a particular type of offense, in the nation. After you have an idea of what is more common than other crimes the local police data will make more sense. That map you are speaking of may be going by relativity, meaning if there is very little reported crime, 2 offenses that are violent may seem like a 100% increase, thus making crime "high". Keep in mind that most crimes go unreported so there would not be any data including those. Even if the police told you, it may or may not make you feel safe. It is all relative. You probably want to ask relatives, friends and co-workers, read the newspapers, follow the local news on TV (online ?) contact the local sheriff & police department and ideally visit the potential areas frequently to learn which areas you feel most at home in. You might also consider asking people on facebook and twitter if you donâ€™t know anyone in Phoenix.
