It depends-- if the house has any type of mortgage on it-- insurance is required with mortgages. If the house is owned outright probably not-- but remember as owner of the house you still have the liability exposure and no insurance leaves you vulnerable. Insurance is a smart option and any prudent person would have it on their asset. I answered this question from the owner/landlord perspective. As a tennent you should have renters insurance because owner is not responsible for your belongings.
