Michelle,
While I agree with what most of the other Realtors have said, I do believe that there are some neighborhoods on the west/north west side of Indy that could fit your needs very well. The most obvious to me would be Plainfield. Plainfield is still close to the city, but yet still has a very country feel. Land prices are affordable, and finding a home with land for gardening is easy. Not to mention the west side of Plainfield is still very rural and surrounded by farms. Oncemore, the town has several large parks and an unbeatable trail system. Perfect for a young couple wanting to raise their kids to be active and "outdorsey". Additionally, Plainfield does have farmer's markets. The Chamber of Commerce Farmers's Market is worth checking out. http://www.plainfieldchamberfarmersmarket.org/
Lastly, the area does have tremendous schools, which would be a wonderful support system if you want to home school or not.

I have negotiated several successful rent to own options but the buyer must make it appealing for the seller. Solid and improving credit, an estimated date of mortgage readiness, sizable down-payment - all these factors and more help a seller become willing to do a lease option.
Call or text me to discuss furhter.

Jamelle Walker is a pretty good Realtor. I suggest you call him 317-453-0917 and check out his website. He helped me. I'm pretty sure he would be glad to help you.
Hi Willie,
We have a very safe neighborhood, in Carmel, 5 minutes from Indianapolis
that has a communal horse barn, municipal water. However, we have
numerous properties near Indy that are exactly what you describe.
I would be happy to check out the Carmel neighborhood for you and perform
a detailed search of all the properties close to Indy, that are on the market
now, to find just the right home. Most of those homes won't be in your
typical neighborhood, but rather areas of upscale, large estate lots.
Which brings me to other questions, in what price range are you looking?
How big a home, how much acreage?
I hope to hear from you,
Marita

Asheli,
the home appears to be sold and should close on the 12th. The last sale on record was in 2008...so I'd assume the current owner has lived there 5 years. You can search for home on my website www.homesaleindy.com or call me at 317-218-7867 and I can give you more insight. Picking a realtor is easy. Picking the RIGHT one is much more difficult.... more

You will need to find someone who is willing to rent their home to you for the next "X" number of years and then you would usually need to obtain financing to purchase the home from them. Just make sure that whatever terms you agree to will be possible for you when it comes time to purchase. Talk to a lender now and see how long before you will be able to qualify for a mortgage because you don't want to enter a "Rent with Option to Buy" without knowing when you will be able to actually buy. If you click on the link below it will take you to my Blog about how a "Rent to Own" works.

Hi YourActualName,
As you know there are no short cuts to knowledge.
I have a lender who specializes in rebuilding credit and he does it
with grant money into an account that your husband pays on ( small
payments of course ) . It's best to speak with a lender, by email is
fine, who can cover multiple options with you.
It's just always best to get facts from a professional rather than ideas
from others.
I'm happy to speak with you or email the lender's contact info to you.
And I hope, you'll allow me to help you when the time comes. But -
no strings.
Regards,
Marita

I would be happy to sit down with you and give you the 411 on buying. A large number of my clientele are first time homebuyers. The process can be quite overwhelming.

You should be able to find something in those areas. I would suggest that you check in the local newspapers from those areas first, or maybe cruze around and look for some "For Rent" signs. Craigslist can be a good resource, but be careful of any rental scams.

One more comment while we are speaking of appropriate
Realtor actions: You've gotten a lot of great, off the cuff pieces
of advice in this forum, Rhonda. But soliciting your business
away from your agent is not one of them.
The best advice you got: Speak with your agent. There's lots going
on that you don't see. You and your listing agent are a team and
you should feel free to chat about what's working, what's not and
what your team could be doing now.
And remember, all the marketing in the world cannot sell a home
that's over priced. So, keep watching the market.... more
Amber I have known that area, and I also just checked the stats, and I believe it can be a good family area. What I would suggest above and beyond the statistics is to ask neighbors about the safety of the neighborhood and if they think it is a good place for a family. You can also ask any leasing agents or on-property personnel.
I think after talking to some people who live in the area, finding out how long they have lived there, and visiting the area at different times and on different days, you should get a pretty good feel for whether or not you would find this neighborhood a good fit for your family.... more
