I would avoid rent to own schemes. They are not in your best interest and are really typically set up to take advantage of people. I think they become more common in times when there are more people who can't afford to buy or have poor credit and are more vulnerable to scams and schemes that seem to promise easy answers.
Talk to a lender and find out what you can afford. Then talk to an agent and see what's possible to buy in your price range. If you're not able to afford what you want then rent and save your money. You really don't want to go down the rent-to-own path and if renting should focus on finding the most affordable rental you can in order to save more for a down payment.... more
