I am also from New England and lived in Winter Garden before moving back up to New England. I missed my family too much but at times I do really still miss Florida. I found no major issues with Winter Garden. In fact, since I've moved back up here, downtown Winter Garden was redone and looks very nice. Great farmer's market. I still own a townhome there which I hope to sell at one point. I currently have family members living there. It's a shame how bad the FL real estate market was hit!! Great for buyers though! Bad for sellers like myself! Crime rates are much different/higher in all of FL compared to New England I think but areas are also much larger down there. I didn't really notice major problems with crime. Overall, Winter Garden would be a great place to live.... more
As a homeowner here in Baldwin Park I would like to welcome you to the community, your family is going to love it here. While there are a good amount of young families and professionals Baldwin is as equally ideal for older residents. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the area but Baldwin is well placed in between Downtown Orlando and Winter Park. Winter Park's population is heavily 55+ and activities for older persons are abundant. Congratulations on this exciting move for you and your family!

To pay attention to small details like mailboxes. I was so focused on checking things on my checklist that I didn't realize my new house lacked an on-property mailbox - it uses a neighborhood mailbox. Small price to pay, because the rest of the house was perfect, but it could have affected negotiating or whether we decided to keep looking...... more
Lee,
I have a home in Kissimmee and one in Ocala on the north west side of Orlando, in horse country. Both are nice areas. The Ocala property has more land for the kids and easy access to I75. Not far from UF if you are thinking about college down the road.

I find it very interesting that no agent so far has noticed than on 10/12/12 you posted this exact same question for 19 diferrent cities. Either you really don't know where you want to go, or you are trying to collect info from lots of hard working agents for free...wonder if you are publishing a moving guide without paying for research efforts. I am sure there is a reason behind the madness. Hope you appreciate the effort of these agents. It would be nice to see if you eventually move, where and why you chosed it.... more
This is a great question...but not the most important one you should be asking at the beginning of your home search.
There are many neighborhoods in Boca Raton that may interest you...but first, you should consider which real estate professional you want to work with and develop a relationship with. As a Buyer you should only be using an Exclusive Buyer Agent ( EBA). An EBA does not LIST any properties and has a fiduciary relationship with JUST THE BUYER. They never have a conflict of interest, never represent the Seller and are not transactional agents who work for themselves and do not have the buyer best interests as their motivation. To learn more about Exclusive Buyer Brokerage visit my website at http://www.OptimaProperties.com, the National Association of Exclusive Buyer Agents ( http://www.NAEBA.org), or the Florida Association of Exclusive Buyer Agent ( FEBA.org)
Florida Brokerages that have Listings with obligations to market and sell properties are known as "Transaction Brokerages". A Transaction Brokerage is simply a "facilitator" of a real estate transaction and by state law, does NOT provide Fiduciary Representation, Total Loyalty or Full Disclosure. These are all elements of an Agency / Agent relationship.
A Buyer Broker / Brokerage and its Exclusive Buyer Agents represent ONLY Buyers. A Buyers Brokerage NEVER have contractual obligations to Sellers. They have no obligation to present properties in the best possible light or to get the HIGHEST PRICE price.
Once you find the right agent to work with you can then narrow down the areas you want to focus on based what schools you want to consider.... more
Hi Cindy:
That's funny you asked. Most everyone in Florida is from somewhere else. I just wrote last week about some of the reasons why I chose Sarasota. Hope this helps you with your decision and if I can help finding you a home, let me know.

Hello Burnout...
If you're like most of my Canadian friends, you love the Carribean as a vacation destination. Why not live there? Key West is the American Carribean. Enjoy the benefits of living in the U.S. and Florida with the feel of the Carribean. Key West is the only continental US city that has never seen frost! Check out my blog on the subject: http://www.trulia.com/blog/jim_olive/2012/06/key_west_the_american_caribbean. Best of luck in your decision...... more
