As noted previously, this is a diverse area with plenty to choose from. The Woodcroft and Hope Valley location near Jordan High School is considered by many to be a very appealing area; however, what's more important is to know the profile of the type of home you are seeking: number of bedrooms/baths, living area square footage, lot size, architechtural design, commuting distance to work, etc. This zip code also contains Durham Academy and Hope Valley Elementary Schools both of which are good schools.

I am a real estate broker and investor who has subscribed to RealtyTrac for almost a year now.

Their information tends to be dated and sometimes inaccurate. There is no substitute for local knowledge. Looks like your searching in the San Jose-Santa Clara area of California. I would recommend contacting the local Association of Realtors and asking for a list of the top REO (Real Estate Owned) brokers. They list the foreclosure properties for sale that the banks have in their REO inventory. They will be more useful to you than anyone else.

What Sylvia said below is correct: you have nothing to lose--as a buyer--by contacting a Realtor. Most will not charge you anything up front and, when you do purchase, the seller almost always pays the full commission.

From what I have seen, the 27712 zip code in Durham is a relatively safe area. Generally, crime seems to be on the decline since Durham hired the new police chief, Jose Lopez. Also, several downtown areas are being revitalized and people are actually moving back to downtown.
