The easiest thing to do is have your real estate agent call the township (or go there directly) and ask the township if the proper permits were received.
It is usually in your best interest to have proper permits for any remodeling that would fall into the permit needed category. I have had situations where the sellers was NOT the first owner, the previous owner(s) had done remodeling without permits, and the wiring was not to code. The current owner was responsible to make the adjustments before they could sell the house.
In some towns, especially if there was new electrical/plumbing and in some cases new framing done, there are permits needed to make sure all the work is done to code. Keep in mind that if the work was done by a professional company, they are usually the ones who file for and receive the permits for the homeowner.
You can also call the township directly (building department) and make the inquiry yourself if needed. Check out this page from Edisons web site for more information;
