Anne,
Sounds like you are not looking for something local but more of a getaway from reality. I think we all need that sometimes. We're located in Warrenton, VA but I lived in Richmond for 10 years. I am a VCU graduate so I know the area quite well. You could make it to Richmond under 2 hours from No. Va and the town is always busy with arts and crafts. The museums are abundant and VCU is known for it's Art program. The Fan is a popular "artsy" place to check out. In my opinion, the cost of living in Richmond is far cheaper than No. Va.
