Kayte Malik answered:
1. Sit down with a mortgage broker as soon as possible - the market going through a lot of changes right now so it would be a good idea to understand fully the financing portion of buying a home.

2. Find a Realtor/Buyer's Agent you can trust and will work for you - **A buyer's agent does not cost you anything, their commission is paid by the seller.

With regards to both Mortgage people and Realtors - ask your friends, co-workers, peers, and family for recommendations and referrals. You need to find someone you trust and will work for you to get the job done.

How do I find real estate open houses for this weekend?

Kayte Malik answered:
Hello Kathy -

Check your local paper, it should have listings of open houses for the upcoming weekend. Also you should be able to search your local Multiple Listing Service Website. I know here in Charlotte, NC you can search for open houses each weekend on the MLS Website. - Wed Aug 29 2007, 07:07

How can I be a smart first time home buyer?

Kayte Malik answered:
Allyson -

It really depends on which area of Charlotte you want to live in and what you want to buy. Uptown, Suburbia or somewhere in the middle (i.e. -Dilworth, Midwood, Wilmore). New Construction vs. Pre Existing. There are some areas in Charlotte that are “Hot” and some that are “Not” so it is good to decide where you want to live first and then become educated on that particular neighborhood.

Sit down with a mortgage broker as soon as possible - the market going through a lot of changes right now so it would be a good idea to understand fully the financing portion of buying a home.
