Summit County vs. Vail - Quality of Life

Brian answered:
I think you've gotten a lot of good answers here. The real question is what defines quality of life for you? I am in my 30's and have lived in Breckenridge for over 4 years, after living here a few winters during college as well. Are you planning on being a hardcore outdoorsman? Or are you someone who likes the city life as well (sporting events, museums, shows, etc.)? Steamboat is nice because summer does arrive sooner; however Durango can say the same thing, but is a lot closer to utah. For the most seclusion Crested Butte would be the choice. As for the best skiing, I wouldn't even want to begin to pick a winner. Each and every resort has its positives and negatives. Good Luck! Brian - Sat May 10 2008, 16:34

Hello Jeff -

The biggest difference between a Condo and SFU is going to be renters. When I say this keep in mind that a lot of condos are rental units. Do you want have some privacy when you are here in the winter months? Obviously during spring and fall it is quite quiet around here. That was my biggest concern when I bought. Do you want your neighbors who are on spring break partying it up next door at 2am? Also, condos have HOA dues, some SFU's do as well which can be expensive up to $500/mo on newer developments. I guess the next question to answer is how much privacy you would like. - Sat May 10 2008, 15:42
Hello Jeff -

Everything depends on the location. Do you want ski in/ski out? Do you want to be able to walk to main street? I live 1 mile north of town between Breck and Frisco. I'm completely remodeling my house and will be putting it up for sale this summer. I've got 6 bedrooms 4 1/2 baths about 2500SF and will be asking under a $1M. So it really depends where you want to be. If you are willing to live a few miles south of town in Blue River you would get even more for your dollar. For $2M you can always build your own dream house. Construction costs can vary greatly, but $300/sf construction costs will get you a top of the line home. Good Luck. Brian - Sat May 10 2008, 10:15

You can offer the seller anything you like. The only thing you have to be worried about is if you really want the house, your offer can't affend the seller. Because then they might not want to sell you the house no matter what you offer. If you really can't afford the house and have one that you like and can afford, then I say offer them the same as what you can get the other house for and let them know that you really like the house, but can only afford this much if they can't meet you at your price you will have to buy the other house. It is also good to look up when and what they paid for the house with your local county assessors office (this is public information). This can also help you in understanding their situation by knowing when and how much they paid for the house. - Sat May 10 2008, 10:32
