If you are young, edgy, and like noise and action - Inner Mission, Lower or Upper Haight
If you are into loft living - SOMA
If you are into neighborhoods with a good mix of people - Noe Valley, Potrero Hill, Russian Hill, Hayes Valley
If you are young and have some money - Marina
If you have lots of money - Pacific Heights, Presideo Heights, St. Francis Woods

Some areas you can look into that I recommend based on the information you gave me are Bernal Heights, Mission Dolores, Noe Valley, Miraloma Park, Diamond Heights if you don't mind some fog.
