With that criteria, Don, just about anywhere! Portland is exceptionally bike-friendly, and even outlying areas will have good public access. Victorians are more available closer in, and at your price range you should be able to get one already nicely rehabbed.

Do a little search on my website (no log-in required), and if you see something you like, give me a call!

There are so many variables...is it a 1 BR detached home, or a 1 BR condo? Is there a bonus or guest room? What's the square footage? Could it be built out someday? How long are you planning to stay?

I'd be happy to listen what you're looking for and help negotiate your way through all of these questions!

Landscaping will certainly make a difference on any home, but especially one with freeway challenges. Bigger trees and bushes can act as sound barriers and more importantly as visual barriers. It won't completely mitigate the problem, though, and your Realtor should be counseling you to price accordingly and/or be prepared for more days on market.

Best of luck!

If you are flipping, perhaps not - unless you get a killer deal! But if you are looking for a home you'll live in for at least 3-5 years, and you qualify, I think it's a great time to buy. Inventory is great, interest rates are low, and a good Realtor who listens to what you want and need can work for you. Take a look around - even under $200k there is a lot to choose from now!

Have fun on your search!

Is Old town/Chinatown a good place to live? Is it safe?

Deb Counts-tabor answered:
It's always good to check out http://www.portlandmaps.com - it will give you VERY detailed crime stats (along with everything else!). If it's a good neighborhood or not also depends on your "fit" - I know many people who absolutely love living downtown, even in the "sketchier" areas. - Thu May 15 2008, 15:46
