Elissa, will you be working in downtown Tampa? Depending on how far a drive is comfortable for you, you might be interested in Seffner or Plant City. Plant City is about a 20-30 minute drive to downtown. I used to drive that every day and didn't mind it at all - it gave me time to get mentally prepared in the morning and to unwind on the way home. There are a lot of good values in Plant City, both in subdivision-style homes as well as out in the country on acre lots or more. I'd be happy to give you more information if that is appealing at all to you.

I know your post is old, but thought I'd pop in with a quick reply. I also live in Lithia, but not in Fishhawk. There are some lovely areas in which you can find resales or new construction and not have the HOA and CDD fees. Of course you then don't have the services that these communities provide, but in most cases they are within a short drive. I'd be happy to provide you with further information if you are still looking!

First let me thank you for your service to our country and community! I'm directly involved in the military community and know what sacrifices you and your family make daily for each one of us!
In addition to the information provided in other posts, I'd recommend you check with USAA. They have some fabulous programs for military members, including cash incentives, no or reduced lender fees, on-line loan monitoring, and services to help you find a trained agent in military relocation (which includes local home buying, not necessarily PCS). Their loan advisors will determine if a VA loan is your best option for financing, and show you all available financing programs.
