It all depends on if your state is a redemption state or not. Some states you have up to a year to buy the house back from whoever purchased the house on the courthouse steps.
This means that you could indeed still buy the house from the old owner. Check with a local title or escrow company to see if your state does allow redemption. If so, you still have a chance but would probably need the advice of a competent real estate attorney.
This may not be your best option. You may get a better deal from the REO department at the bank. Go to your public records and put in that bank to see if they own any other properties. If so, check to see if they are listed and contact that realtor.
