Oh Dan, the Realtors aren't going to like your answer. It flies in the face of many claims that their service is free to buyers.
The commission is definitely paid by the buyer, It's built into the price of the home. Why do you think people try to sell houses themselves at a discount. I've been rebating my commission for years and big box Realtors hate that I sell so many homes.
I keep 1% and give the rest back to my clients. My average rebate is about $10,000 and that makes a big difference. My clients have to do a little of the work in driving by homes they're interested in before I show them the inside but for $10,000 most people are happy to spend a few hours of their time looking at homes by themselves.
