Kent,
Here in NYC open house are the best and sometimes the only way to see a home as many of the listing agents are too busy to schedule showings or want to get both sides of the deal... I try to attend as many open house as possible, so that I am familiar with what is available and then I will either schedule a showing or bring my buyers to the next open house.. Of couse video tours can be like an open house, but as a listor I want to encourage activity, as human nature makes people desire, what other people want... - Thu Jan 3 2008, 09:26
Satoh,
That would depend on what your needs are? Will you be working in Manhattan and going away on weekends? Do you have a large family ?The Manhattan real estate prices have historically continued to increase so Manhattan real estate can be a good investment.... On the other hand if you can find a rent stabilized Manhattan apartment, they have rules about how much time you can spend somewhere else as it must be your primary residence...You might be able to find a "deal " upstate" especially through some Goverment programs but in those it usually has to be your primary residence and many NYC coops and condos don't allow pied -a terres..There are many legal, financial and tax considerations so I would definitely consult a good local attorney and accountant.
Please check back and contact me when you are ready as I would be glad to help you find something here and Upstate. (I am in the process of changing Brokers)

Hello Barbara! I have to confirm what Eileen said and also suggest you try Brooklyn or Long Island City...
Are you looking for a loft in Soho ,Manhattan? Did you mean $2,20000.00?
The days of finding an bargain artist/industrial loft are decades over! An artist friend of mine about 4 years ago was renting part of her Soho loft out for $3000.00 with no kitchen and what a deal it was then! ( it was over a noisy bar too!) I'm not a loft expert and I 'm most familiar with the Upper Westside, but this past August the least expensive apartment I was able to find in Manhattan, for my client was a tiny 5th floor 2 room apartment walkup on East 34th St for $1750 without utilities or laundry facilities!
Good luck! - Thu Jan 3 2008, 08:29
