A great question!! The criteria you should use are the things that are most important to you and your family's unique situation. Do you want a lot of property or would you prefer a condo? City, suburban or rural? Ease of commute will depend on where you commute to. Regarding schools, there are a number of web sites from which you can investigate school districts. I encourage clients to visit the schools if they have the time. Besides driving the local neighborhoods, another way to check out a community is to visit the local grocery store. The tough part of deciding on where and what to buy are the trade-offs that must be made. Buyer's constantly make trade-offs between the various criteria that are important to them. The most important part of a Real Estate professional's job is to listen to you and help guide you through the trade-offs that you'll invariably need to make. You may want to meet with more than one before deciding with whom you want to work. Good luck and let me know if I can help further. - Thu Mar 13 2008, 15:47
