Hi Aileen,
I listen to the client. For clients I knew were going to have a hairy moving day with four kids, I made a basket of paper plates and utensils and and included a gift certificate to the pizza place down the street -- and a couple $1 to keep the youngest ones busy. (They'd mentioned they didn't know how they'd handle dinner that night.)
This week, I picked up a tabletop Christmas tree for someone who fretted she was moving and wouldn't have up a tree or any decorations for Christmas.
I find I can always come up with the right thing when I listen.
