You basically answered your own question in a way. Before even thinking about purchasing a home - whether it be a single family residence, condo, townhome, etc, you need to become acclimated with the area & deal with school first. That will give you a lot of time to get to know where & where not you may wish live & also get a better idea of what type of home would suit you the best.
Yes, your price range is quite reasonable to get you something very nice.
