I would recommend measuring the exterior with a measuring device.Then ,I would subtract any two story spaces. For instance,if it is a 2-story family room only count the space on the first floor not the second floor.
Also, subtract the garage square footage. You should be able to get a better idea of the true square footage.
The tax office does make mistakes.You should double check the square footage of any home you are interested in purchasing. If this truly is a priority for you when making a buying decision. Best wishes!Anne - Mon Oct 20 2008, 13:54
