Hi,
If you're thinking of the Carolina's ....consider Greenwood, SC! It's a average size town with a great deal of growth and development going on. We have Lake Greenwood which is a very large draw to the area.
It is also the home of Lander University as well as a 2 year college. Travel is pretty much effortless (no traffic jams!) and we're approximately 3 hours from the beach and 1 hour from the mountains! As for cost of living....it's incredibly low in comparison to what you're use to. I have friends in the area so I'm aware of the cost of living.
