The realtors may be trying to set your expectations. They also may not be experienced in short sales, so they will try and steer you away. Many short sales fail because the buyer walks away before the sale is approved. An informed buyer and seller with short sale experienced agents are key. I have closed these sales in 30 days and others not at all.
