I think the previous answers have sufficiently represented the great communities of Chapel Hill and Carrboro. If you are interested in investigating some other communities nearby as well, I'd suggest that you consider Hillsborough. This is a great small community that is only about 15 minutes away, and offers a great family atmosphere with a diverse and liberal culture that you are seeking. The schools are also good.
