Have you tried to sell the home as a short sale yet? Banks are typically allowing folks to try and sell it instead of just letting it go to foreclosure.
Of course, you need to speak with a real estate attorney regarding any legal issues. We cannot answer those for you unfortunately.
I am a Short Sale Specialist and have had some really good results. If you'd like more information on trying to sell your home as a short sale instead of the foreclosure being on your record 7 years, feel free to email or call me. After I know your specific information, I could give you my opinion on what I think your options are.
Please don't think you are alone in this. There are a lot of really good people going through the same thing. I know it's stressful and difficult, but we try to help where we can.
