After determining the commute time, compare homes prices to make sure you will be able to find a home in your price range in these areas first. Then visit the areas that you are interested in and continue your research with neighborhood information (try http://www.zipskinny.com) and research school districts if applicable http://(www.schoolmatters.com). Or contact a Real Estate Agent who can help you with your research.
