Hi Jennifer,
If you aren't planning to move for a few years, then it might make your life easier, and save you money to consider drought resistant plantings. It will not "raise the market value" as appraisers are not allowed to give a lot of value to landscaping (past hurricanes that destroyed landscaping made that happen). Decks, and patios will add value, and their size is factored.
Of course curb appeal is always important and will help you sell your home faster by making it more attractive and competitive. I would make it as attractive as possible for the least amount of money as a general rule. That also means keeping in mind whether you will have to replace what you plant today in several years when you go to sell!
You are so smart to ask first! So many people don't, especially when it comes to home improvements. If you are considering other improvements, be sure to ask first. I always hate having to disappoint clients after they have spent $$ by telling them that they didn't increase their value/won't recoup that investment!
Feel free to contact us if you have other questions. We would love to help you!
