Hi CLfeather the rent to buy option is great in theory but does not work very often. One thing to consider is that if the property value drops your option becomes worth less because you could buy a comprable property for less than the your option price. Also as other posters have said inventory is very low right now and sellers do not have to do the rental option to sell a propety. I would suggest renting on a month to month basis or at most a 1 year lease and get back in Alameda so you can be ready to buy when the right property comes on the market.
