Hi Liz,
I would like to respond to this question and offer a slightly different response. First and foremost you want to make sure you enjoy the neighborhood you are going to live in. However, throughout Chicago you will probably be able to find many neighborhoods which you can fall in love with. With this being said there are several I would caution you against because I do not see price appreciation in the next 5 to 7 years.
I would caution against the south loop for instance as cheap construction and over building has created many issues and we will probably continue to see a decrease in prices over the next year of at least 10% in my opinion. I would caution against west areas of Logan Square which have been completely over building, or over condo converted. I strongly recommend desirable areas of Uptown, Bucktown, Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, West Loop, and East Logan Square. Let me know if you have any questions I would be happy to help! I'm sure with the recent cold you are wishing you were back in Cali :)
