If you're planning to close on your home in a year, then I would suggest beginning your actual search of a home about 4 months before. That should give you plenty of time to find the perfect home, make an offer, and go through the loan and closing process. You don't want to start any earlier than that because if a seller can't wait to close until you're ready, you don't want to fall in love with the perfect house that's no longer available.
