I am a Broker/REALTOR in Beech Mountain, NC, having owned property here since 1988 and relocating permanently from Marco Island, FL, in January 2005.
My partner, Ilena Accardi, and her family have lived and operated their family business (The Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria) on Beech Mountain for approximately 20 years.

"Debbie breaks the mold when it comes to Realtors. We’ve all heard the horror stories about past experiences with agents/brokers who don’t return calls, “list you and leave you”, etc. Not Debbie! I sold one of these units recently and the fees were $150/mo. at that time. They include water, sewer, basic cable and use of a club house that has laundry facilities, bathrooms, kitchen and social room facilities. This unit also has a Beech Mountain Club membership, which provides pool, golf, tennis, fitness and much, much more. Excellent question and answers. I am a Realtor on Beech Mountain and am currently involved with a few buyers that are working with different mortgage lenders for their unique situations. Hey! This house expired from the MLS system. I just happened to have talked with the owner/builder today. His prior agent is now inactive and I asked if he was going to relist and, if so, if he would consider listing with us. He said he would consider it but another agent showed it recently and he is supposedly getting an offer in for $340,000. However, he has not seen the offer yet. I am showing it tomorrow to a couple that will be looking for a builder to build on their lot. If you guys could go $340,000 without the BMC membership he is obviously willing to take that.

Greg, another bit of information you may wish to consider if you want to buy in this area is that Ski Beech is investing a lot of money, time and effort in updating their facility. They are adding a tubing run, building a new terrain park, upgrading to a new quad lift on the Oz Run, bringing in new grooming equipment and experienced groomers and more. We are all expectantly awaiting the opening of Ski Beech this season and hope the weather assists in making it a winter to remember. If you are not familiar with the Beech Mountain Club or the Buckeye Recreation Center on Beech Mountain, those are additional amenities worth exploring.
You ask a very good question. It depends on what you are looking for on the mountain. You need to consider whether you will be using the golf course, want a view, would rather have a woodsy feeling with or without a creek or if you would rather be by the Buckeye Recreation Center. As for resale or buy a lot and build, if it were me I would exhaust the potential good deals on existing homes first since they are very accessible to look at. If you can't find what you want there are plenty of builders needing the work and over 200 lots to choose from. There are good points with all so just make a wish list and you should be able to make a decision with a qualified real estate agent.
