If you appreciate 1920's spanish eclectic architecture, detached homes with front and back yards, and having a diverse set of neighbors whose names and families you actually know, then you should check out St. Mary's Park just adjacent to Bernal Heights, or Westwood Park off of Monterey Ave.
These are two of San Francisco's best kept secrets. Both are both small planned neighborhoods built in the 1920s, and both are experiencing a new wave of popularity with families committed to living in SF. Each has at least one commercial district within walking distance. St. Mary's Park has it's own City sponsored recreation center and playground (currently undergoing a major renovation due to be complete by end of 2008). - Sun Aug 3 2008, 17:28
