Neighborhoods in Kailua-Kona are quite variable. I lived in Kona for seven years, and worked in Kailua much of that time. There are nice local communities with families who have occupied the same home for several generations - everyone in the neighborhood knows each other and takes care of each other. At the other end of the spectrum are exclusive - and exclusionary - gated communities. And there is everything in between.
