Hello Ian!
That area is on Detroit's east side (anything east of Woodward Ave) vs. the west side. Without seeing it personally, i would guess that it's middling at best.
Something very important to keep in mind is PROPERTY TAXES. Many times higher in Detroit vs the surrounding communities. Be sure to check this out! They're killer.
However, if your heart, or need, makes Detroit the only choice, there is something for everyone. Just start communicating with a good realtor with your wants / needs / interests plus budget and via email and phone they'll be able to zero you in on properties to fit your needs. That way, when you ultimately get up here to look it will be a value-added trip.
Also, FYI google maps now has Detroit available for its street view option. Very cool way to get a feel for an area.
Also.2, the Detroit Free Press Newspaper
http://(www.free.com) has a list of all metro Detroit foreclosed properties online. Another good source of data and potential homes.
Finally, Good Luck! No matter where you end up in this area you will be pleasantly surprised. All the choice / variety of a major metropolitan area but with a relatively low cost of living.
Take Care,
Rita
