Best resource--get a copy of the Sunday Chapel Hill News real estate section--their classifieds combined with a separate classified paper (called "The Advocate") some years ago. There are roommate as well as separate apartment listings. Many older houses in CH have small apartments built in and these can be very reasonable and a good choice. They're usually advertised in the paper, although some real estate agents in town manage these as well. The Daily Tar Heel (student newspaper) has rental listings as well. Craigslist is another good option. - Mon Mar 31 2008, 16:07
Given your requirements, I would look at the older neighborhoods in CH...at the upper end of your price range you can find a lot of 1/2 to 3/4 acre, an older home that may be very nicely updated, few if any pesky covenants regarding outbuildings ...just keep in mind that this area is very heavily wooded and vegetable gardening may be difficult because of shade, but flower gardening...wow. Best place ever for that! The entire CH-Carrboro school district is very well regarded. Note that except for the historic district, for the most part individually owned homes were not constructed in Chapel Hill until the mid to late 1950's--most structures and systems prior to that were part of the university. Good luck! - Sun Feb 24 2008, 06:32
