Germantown schools are fantastic. I don't know where the thought came from below that Arlington High is the only Shelby County school to choose. There is nothing to fear...Shelby County schools are among the best in the state--all A+ on the state report card for some Germantown schools. We would never even consider private school--it would be a waste of money.
Riverdale Elementary/Middle in Germantown is fantastic. It's a K-8 and the principal has been there over 20 years. Germantown High is now the only high school in the area to offer the International Baccalaureate diploma. - Wed Apr 9 2008, 16:30
Please don't listen to the naysayers below. We moved here from Los Angeles, where I was born & raised (after 2 years in Nashville) 6 years ago, and I have no desire to live anywhere else but here. In L.A., I lived within a half hour of the beach, mountains, Disneyland, Hollywood, and downtown. May I repeat...I LOVE it here. I have 3 kids who attend a county school, but the city schools in some areas are fantastic, too. Cordova High School was in Newsweek's top 1200 in the nation. Private school is not even an option for us--not because of the cost, but because with so many good schools, it's a waste of money.
People who complain about the crime have either been personally affected by it (and I feel for them), or they have never lived in another big city. In many ways, Memphis is a big city that acts like a small town, so bad news travels fast. ANYTHING that happens, you hear about it on the news.
We attend a church where over 30% of the congregants have moved here from other places around the country in the past few years, and only a few would like to go back where they came from.
Memphis is a great place to live & raise children. If everyone else in the country wants to pay too much for their housing, more power to them. I'll just be here enjoying my paid-off home. :) - Wed Apr 9 2008, 16:20
