I find it funny how people who dont live in the area say the coomute is bad to NYC or the schools are bad. I live in the area and quite frankly I feel people in the area are trying to cash in abit. The commute by car to NYC is 1hr, by train is 35-40mins. The school district compared to other districts in the county holds its own and then some. The Taxes vary alot from town to town here but In Yorktown/ Yorktown Heights they are high which may be one reason. Another reason is right now we do have alot of the City Dwellers looking for a surburan area outside the city to live. Lower Westchester (north of Yonkers and White Plains) are prime area's yet very expensive price wise. If you go north of Upper Westchester (putnam/dutchess counties) you'll find good prices but yes more of a commute and very rural compared to the Yorktown area. Hence Yorktown and the Yorktown area between those two choices has the speculation to some as being the perfect choice. House prices are less then Lower Westchester and the Commute to NYC is much better then a Putnam or Dutchess county home. Plus the area has seen massive changes over the years. I moved here in 1995 on the weekends shops on the main drags (routes 6 and 202) used to shut down at 8pm :). Now you have Wal-Mart, BJ's Wholesale, etc etc etc the area is much more built up and vibrant just 10+ years removed. - Fri May 16 2008, 09:36

My home is for sale in Mohegan lake Gizmo, its a hamlet to Yorktown. We are a part of the Lakeland School District,( Lakeland HS) and I can tell you the schools are quite good. In fact when I was given the choice in the early 90's to live in Yonkers or another lower Westchester school district me and my wife choose Lakeland. I cant comment on The Yorktown/Panas district though its the neighboring district to us. Below is the link...if your interested in the area and arent turned on by the Yorktown schools this may be an alternative for you.
