Thank you very much for replying! I don't fully understand everything you wrote, but it has indeed triggered another thought pattern because I will research a bit.
What do you mean by a "pre-existing" home? Don't most people go out "house-hunting" and look at/purchase homes already there that are being sold?
One house we've looked at was built years ago, but all but torn down and renovated/built onto a couple of years ago. We'd love to buy it since it's essentially new. The biggest problem is that the taxes are high (and it's not in the highly desirable area, just okay.

Thank you so much for answering, Mikem! I thought I'd never get a reply.
We don't, fortunately, need to sell our house to buy.
I know that it is a decision we ultimately have to make, but just wanted to search for some cold, hard economic facts to back up or to consider in our decision.
Thank you! - Sat Mar 8 2008, 21:59
Thank you very much, Don. That is very helpful. We definitely do not currently have a comfortable balance, as our house is very small & poorly laid out. We could add on, but probably never make it what we want (and our standards are not THAT high!). The examples from Virginia help (the Washington D.C. suburbs, right? It's the same idea...we're close to Manhattan.) . Thank you! - Mon Mar 10 2008, 14:07
Thank you very much for responding, Dustin and Sylvia. Dustin, I live in Scarsdale now. It's a really, really wealthy community. I have basically one of the smallest homes in a wealthy community, which "they" say is good, but it's not helping my husband & I to live well! We see nicer places in other towns: one we saw in Thornwood, which is, I guess, much less sought after. I wish I knew a little more about it. But it's supposed to be okay & we can buy a really nice house there. Any info is appreciated!
Sylvia-Thank you-that is very helpful feedback.
I figured that even if realtors don't know these areas, it's probably the same everywhere, to some extent.
(I don't know how these forums work & hope it's okay that I wrote back so much!) - Mon Mar 10 2008, 12:56
Thank you very much for answering, Charles. Yes, the "we" is my husband and I. I will write a list of both places & how are needs are met. Scarsdale is very convenient & a good town, but it hasn't been easy finding the right place to move up. I appreciate your answer and have bookmarked your website. Thanks! - Sun Mar 9 2008, 18:23
I discovered the site doing research on Google about up & coming Westchester, N.Y. towns. Houses here are very expensive. We own, but need something bigger. How far in advance do we search? It probably depends on the area and other circumstances, but people I know in this part of the country often search for a while due to cost. We were looking around for a while at the same time that we were accessing future needs. Now that we want to make a move, we are trying to figure out if we should stay in our exclusive area or go to a much less exclusive area but get a much better house for the $. When I looked at questions on this site, I thought that it would be a good place to get the financial/realtor point of view. - Sat Mar 8 2008, 13:07
