Hi Van,
Please do not listen to any agent that tries to sell you into any Memphis City school area. You must get out into the county.

We also live in Lakeland and love it, but are being transferred this year. Our lovely home in a lakefront community has a big back yard with a water garden and playground will be available for rent. It's Lakeland Elememtry (the best!), Arlington MS & HS (also great). This is comfortable (3 mi to the mall), safe living with wonderful neighbors.

Our neighborhood in Lakeland is seems to be more than 20% military families.Nice to have like-minded folks to connect with. It's a simple commute on I-385, and the schools are excellent and it's a great lifestyle on/around the lake. We plan to move within the next 6 months and would like to rent our home. We moved to Memphis 2 years ago and lived close in to the city-- "East Memphis", or the White Sation School district earlier mentioned. I am a stay at home mom, and while it was convenient, it was not very family oriented and I did not feel comfortable with the level of crime. We moved to Lakeland, and feel very safe, excellent schools, and great neighbors, family friendly. I do not feel isolated or in the boonies as others mentioned. It is less than 3 miles to the mall or anything else we need, and livein a lake community filled with children for a lot less than in town, without the Memphis city taxes.
