What compnany would you recommend to conduct credit and background checks for potentail tenants?
I use the National Tenant Network to screen tenants. You may not be able to pull credit as the industry has made it harder. This is suppose to help identity theft.

Yes $65 is a very good s.f. build price. As you said nothing fancy at this price. Architects are around $1 per s.f. as well. Sounds like your doing pretty good thus far.
