What about Galewood, North of North Avenue and East of Harlem. This puts you just north of Oak Park because Oak Park north boundary is North Avenue. Yet, you pay city taxes, not Oak Park taxes. Many people find it a great place to live with the best of both worlds. they tend to send their children to religious schools like the Luthern Schools in Oak Park/RiverForest, Fenwick High school, Chicago Archiodesian schools. This works if you have only 2 children given the tax differential between the city and the suburbs all around Galewood. I am not certain, but I belive Galewood in the city, it is a Chicago neighborhood, not a suburb like Forest Park is a suburb, I belive Galewood in the City is seen as a "better" place than Forest Park, but not certain of that. This was true for sure 30 years ago but 30 years???..................much can change and I have not been anywhere near any concern bout that for myself so I cannot say. all I can do is suggest. Also, try the Oak Park place where they place people, like they help you vind a place in Oak Park. I don't know exactly the name of the organization, it is a non-profit I belive and is an Oak Park municipal org. All I recall is that it was put in place abuot, again, 30 years ago but I know it still is very active, it was put in place to maintain the existing diversity, stability and property values in Oak Park. Some sort of social crisis was tshreatenting OakPark/River Forest who hold many architectural landmarks, and great schools and good people with diverstiy and stability. In order to preserve the great way of life for all that had existed adn was severely threatened at that time, the Powers taht were, established this great org. Again, I am 30 years out, but I noticed the organization in the news not all that long ago. Also, friends of mine, who raised famlies in Galewood and OakPark have childrenand grandchildren remaining in that area and who are totally hapy.... more
Tenancy of any type is limited to the number and specific persons who initially rented the property, unless it is otherwise defined in writing.
Adding people as occupants post the start date of the lease will likely get you a notice you have violated your lease terms and asking you to stop. Failure to comply can result in your landlord going to court to validate their interpretation you have broken your lease.
If there is no written lease, the landlord may simply give you notice your tenancy has ended and you will be out.
if you find it necessary to have more than the original number of tenants, or some tenants change, talking to your landlord beforehand is the best way to avoid a confrontation or end of tenancy.
Reasonable people reach reasonable conclusions, a little communication goes a long way in tenant / landlord relations.... more

It's very encouraging to see a woman asking this question!
Great advice for finding SRO's, especially on the North Side of Chicago: Walk/drive/bike the main thoroughfares of Humboldt Park, and Uptown, and Edgewater, and even Lakeview, even near the Gold Coast. Whenever you see a suspicious looking building with people coming and going, the odds are higher than average that an SRO is inside.
Alternately, some 3 and 4 bedroom apartments, in multi-unit buildings, like your typical three flat, have North Side single professionals looking to rent a room out for near to your price, or your alter ego's. Craigslist has a entire section dedicated to it. Good luck!... more
I have worked with several people over the past 6 months with credit issues. I gathered all of the necessary information from the client, approached a few owners with the circumstances, and negotiated the terms between the client and owner. 90% of the time, the owner approved the clients with larger security deposits. TIPS: Work with private owners - do not even try with management groups, have all necessary paperwork ready to go and presented neatly, be able to present multiple months of rent in the form of a security deposit, and find a broker/agent/consultant that has worked with these situations in the past.
Good luck!... more
Adrian, i would start by knocking at some doors, then check tax record, then check recorder of deeds, if it's a corporation then check state Web site if nothing yet hire a private investigator, good luck
