Charleston Sc was voted one to top 10 Cities in the USA where it is cheaper to Own than Rent. Before you sign a lease, see if it's possible to purchase your home. A home is your savings account, rent payments are your landlords savings account !!.
If you feel it's still renting your best option then read line item by line item what your signing especially the following: When is payment considered late, What are the HOA rules of the community (is it something you can deal with or is it too restrictive), ask if the rental has a service contract for major repairs and who is the contact person sprecific for repairs. Suggest a good going over of the home before you actually move in and do your own inspection walk through. Any damage present you should make note and point out to the property manager and have that manager sign off on your findings. Needless to say keep copy with signature for when you exit the home. If an Realtor has shown you the house then ask that Realtor to review the lease for you as well, they are earning a modest commission after all !!
