I am from the UK and purchased my first home in Florida (Ft. Lauderdale). I didn't incur any additional closing costs as a foreigner but did have to put more money down. Contact Justin Friedle at email@example.com. Tell him that Trish MacDonald told you to contact him (so that he gives you VIP service!) He is a mortgage broker and the one that got me my first mortgage. I have found that there are many brokers who don't understand how to deal with mortgage for foreigners. Good luck and if I can be of more help, please don't hesitate to contact me.... more
The first thing you need to do it to find a good Buyer's Agent to represent you so that you will have someone working for you to get the best property, price and terms. You need to find someone who has market knowledge and skills. (I know a good agent in the Ft. Lauderdale area if you would like a referral).
If you are planning to obtain financing, you need to talk with a mortgage lender - Non-United States citizens have different loan requirements than do American Citizens. You will need a larger downpayment and there may not be a fixed rate loan available for you. (I just went through this with a Canadian client).
You can also start looking on line at properties through the various websites in order to start familiarizing yourself with market values and areas.
