Asked by Jason, UK Sun Jun 1, 2008

the weather, rising costs of living, and general state of this country so am looking to relocate to the good old US of A. And we are looking at california, particualry the coast, I want to be gone from here and relocate within the next year. me and my wife and child love the beach, the weather, would love to surf every morning etc...so where would your recomendatins be to start realistically looking to relocate too, i would imagine a 4-5 bed home with pool, and near the beach would be good, the area would have to have good nightlife, be near to good schools/universities etc...and a ball park figure for a property would be $2,000000 we could probably stretch to $3million any advice would be great thank you, If you could give me a few examples of areas, then i could look into the differences between them
Thank You

Contact me if you would like a (slightly) biased opinion, I grew up in Southern California, lived in Central California for 4 years and went to college in Northern California.

Lots of good choices!

I live in Malibu. This is a unique town... it has a small town feel of "getting away from it all" yet you are only minutes to Santa Monica, West LA and the San Fernando valley. We have top restaurants here... and some of southern California's most pristine beaches and best surf, hiking, mountains... it is endless! With your price range, you may be able to find a beautiful home... but it will not be ocean front.
p.s. I am in no way a real estate agent... I am just a Malibu resident that loves her town...
my second choice would be Santa Barbara...

Hi Jason,

I would highly encourage you to take a look at our Central Coast area. We have the beaches, lakes, wineries and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo . I have traveled all over the US and wouldn't live anywhere else. You can e-mail me if you would like some suggestions of where to stay and visit.

Jason, Curt Abramson from Bailey Properties in Santa Cruz here. I'm not impartial on this subject, but I recommend you take a close look at Santa Cruz County, in Northern California. Not only are we known as Surf City, due to the great surf breaks such as Steamer Lane, Cowells, Pleasure Point, etc., but we are also home to the University of California Santa Cruz, only 30 minutes to Silicon Valley, 90 minutes to San Francisco, and have an incredibly diverse community with lots of creative types. Although the city of Santa Cruz has an urban center, there are lots of small communities with their own unique character.

Homes such as you have described are available from just over $1,000,000 and up. There are homes available in city neighborhoods, suburban settings, and lovely rural locales, some just minutes from the beach. See some West Side Santa Cruz neighborhood info below to get an idea of one area you might like. Contact me for other options as well. Good luck, and welcome to the US!

There is a lot of wonderful possibilities in LA County and Orange County. If you'd like to do a quick search of areas, check my website. My area of expertise is South Orange County. Come out the Gold Coast. 75 Degrees and sunny today. :)

Hi Jason,
The weather in Southern California meets your needs. In the price range you are looking I am sure you will be able to find something very nice. I would look into Belmont Shores, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Del Mar and Laguna Beach for starters. All of these areas would meet your criteria. Email me at walter@ocnorth.com if you have any questions.
Good Luck, Walter
