Looking to buy in tampa.

Asked by Pete, okinawa Wed Mar 19, 2008

What areas offer the best schools for my two young kids? I will be relocating this summer and will work at MacDill AFB. I have heard the the schools in Riverview and Valrico are the best option. Any advice will be appreciated.

Pete,
Lithia/Fishhawk is great, Riverview and Apollo Beach also have great communities. Check out my website for listings and school information at http://www.riverviewrealtor.com. Good Luck. Susan

Hi Pete:
If your still there, Tampa has allot of good schools, I have lived in the North Tampa area (Lutz) for over 30 years and had my 3 children go thru the public school system. All of which I am proud to say have gotten full scholarships. The school does make a difference but more important is the extra work a family will put into their learning. The schools put forth the material and instruction but it is up to the student to learn.
All my children went to Lutz elementary and then Gaither high school. Not the highest rated, but great schools.
My youngest daughter just graduated USF with a degree in Math and made the dean’s list. (She must get all those smarts from her mom) I think most of the schools are good just don't pick one that has a failing grade. This website should help. http://www.greatschools.net/modperl/rankings.pl/fl/ you might have to copy and paste it. You’re not too far from the AFB from the north side of town. I am sure you will enjoy living in Tampa you can also look up all Florida schools from my website if you wish. enjoy Ron

Hi Pete, Just a recommendation.... You should probably rent before you buy so you get to know the areas. South Tampa, North St. Petersburg or even Clearwater are not that far from MacDill and there are some good school systems in Pinellas County as well. We have worked with several folks from MacDill in the past and they enjoyed living in Pinellas County due to proximity to beaches, St. Pete, Clearwater and Tampa all equally. Let us know if we can help!

Check out East Pasco County. Great commute, schools systems and excellent communities to raise your family.

I personally would choose Valrico over Riverview anyday when it comes to schools.

You can buy more for the money right now in Riverview than Valrico.

Hope this helps you

Hi Pete,
If you are looking in the Riverview area, that is my specialty. Not only have my children attended the schools in that area, I also served on the boundary committee in order to get my community zoned into the best schools. I have served on Boards of six area schools and currently live in FishHawk Ranch where the schools are all A Rated and there are many military families in this community. Please be sure to check it out!! Also, feel free to visit my website or contact me for a personal tour of the area. Good luck! Lynn Seevers, Keller Williams Realty

I know what you mean about the email. I know the time difference is extreme (I was just in Hawaii and am heading the opposite way soon). I've got an AF friend who was stationed in Okinawa and retired here in Riverview and works at CENTCOM with me. Check back later, I'll open up a yahoo email and than send you my work one.

Thomas,. Thanks for the response. I would like to get a hold of you via e-mail. I'm not sure the best way to go about it. Is there anyway that I can contact you through this site without giving my e-mail address to everyone?

Pete, I work at Macdill and live in Riverview. Check out the web reference below. Riverview schools are great but you've got to make sure you get in the right area due to Hillsborough constantly changing the lines. The market is in freefall right now. You will see people cite Forbes (they said Bear Sterns was a good investment) but a better gauge is Case-Schiller. Do you have a sponsor? I've rented for two years and watched the bubble burst. No wasted rent as the value of the house dropped more than I've paid in rent during this time. I don't have any idea how we could exchange emails w/o getting spammed but I would love to get you my .mil address so you can verify my identity. Regards

Hello Pete,
I live myself in S. Tampa, and definetely would say it's generally a great living all around, maybe with exception of S. Manahatthan, below Montgomery.
in the 300' range you could easily live in the 33629, 33611, 33616 and 33609; below Kennedy and within less than 45 minutes to MCdill AFB.
I do avail some properties for your consideration, or I would be more than glad to perform a custom search.
Schools in those zip codes are mostly "A" rated and include Plant High School.
I'm just assuming you're in the force, therefore getting a VA loan would be great because of the benefits, just to mention 1.......0% down.

Pete,
Nathan may be correct in commute times based on traffic, however your Bang for your Buck, most for your money in home size would not be South Tampa. In Brandon the average listing price for a 2000 sq ft home is $218K. in South tampa your looking at probably 1500-1600 sq ft....

Tampa has a lot of A rated schools. Bloomingdale and Valrico do have some great schools but that area is 30 to 45 minutes from MacDill AFB. South Tampa is another area that you could look into. Here is a link to the Hillsborough County School System: http://www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/schools/ This site can help you find information on all of the schools in Tampa.
