I found a great home (i think) in Red Cedar in Levittown PA. Can anyone tell me if this is a safe/good neighborhood?

It is true that homes in Bristol Township are less but that is for a reason. Colleen, what I tell all my clients is that everything looks great during the day so they need to go back to the property at night. Check out if there is any Grafitti anywhere. If there are kids hanging out at the park or on corners after dark it is a rule to keep trucking. ALso, check out how the neighbors are taking care of their homes Please remember that you are buying a neighborhood and not only a home.

Hope this helps.

Hi Colleen - I grew up in Levittown, my parents first home was in Greenbrook and my first home was in Plumbridge. I have a few friends that bought their first homes in Red Cedar. It is a nice neighborhood. Good luck! FYI - In Levittown there are 3 different public school districts, Neshaminy, Bristol and Pennsbury. The homes in Bristol Township School District tend to cost less then the ones in Neshaminy and Pennsbury.

I don't know WHAT would possess Caracsip to say that Dogwood and Bristol Twps aren't safe places to live. I've lived here my entire life (I'm 56) and it's a totally safe area. For one thing, the Farmbrook section (right across Haines Road from Dogwood) is where the majority of police, firefighters and EMTS live! When my father was ill and was being rushed to the hospital several times over a period of months, the EMT's lived around the corner and when they would hear the call for the rescue squad come over their scanner, they would grab their gear and RUN around to my parents house and take care of him, even BEFORE the rescue squad showed up. There are playgrounds and basketball courts and baseball fields all over, there's a smalled wooded section behind John Fitch Elementary school and every day, morning, afternoon, evening and night, people are out walking together, with their dogs and children.Weekends are full of people out mowing their lawns, taking care of their property, having yard/garage sales. I'm thinking that this Caracsip who is listed as being from East Windsor NJ doesn't have a clue about Levittown.

I grew up in Levittown all my life. I've found that the Neshaminy Levittown sections (snowball, forsythia, red rose, twin oaks, etc) are safer than the Bristol Levittown sections (dogwood, etc). Another suggestion is to go to the section around twilight and look around for people out and about in the section. In snowball around sunset you see people walking their dogs, kids riding bikes, couples taking a stroll, people mowing their lawn, etc. It shows that the area is safe and has a real community feel to it.

Hi Colleen,... I believe your Realtor will be able to assist you with this information. Remember please, that in most cases, when you are the buyer, your Realtor Services are free, so you have no reason not to use one. Your Realtor can give you information on Schools, and community. There are many places you can also go for information... Ask the local police department. check out the Megan's Law information in the neighborhood. Check out the local environmental information. Do your due dilligence before you buy your home. Good luck to you

Hello Colleen,
In my opinion Red Cedar is a very nice neighborhood. I've shown many homes in Red Cedar. If you ask 10 different people that question you are going to get 10 different answers. You can try calling the Bristol Township Police Department directly & someone will give you the answers you are looking for with regards to crime & safety.

Hi Colleen:

Your Realtor can provide crime statistics for a given area, plus, you can always drive by the neighborhood, assuming you are local to do so.

Outside of that, I suggest that you contact the local police department (there will be a non 911 number for general information) where the home you are intersted in is located. In Pennsylvania, most police departments are located in the same building as the township's municipality (exception is cities such as Philadelphia, etc.).

When you call, tell them you are interested in a home located on such and such street and ask them to provide information on the street and neighborhood. They may put you in touch with a police officer who handles these types of questions.

If you ask that question to 10 different people, you will probably get 10 different answers. I would recommend doing a couple of drive-bys in the neighborhood at various times including friday and saturday night. Also, when you see some neighbors outside, it cannot hurt to ask them what there opinion and assessment of their neighborhood is since they live there. Further, your buyers agent would have access to local crime statistics and so forth. Good luck in your progress !
