Where in the US or Canada can you live and shop, work, get medical care and socialize without owning a car?

Asked by Jolie Muss, Upper West Side, New York, NY Mon Feb 23, 2009

(Yes I've asked a similar question before but it showed up under Alabama!) I'm asking because I don't want to drive and might want to move out of NYC someday....

Hi Jolie,

My answer is a pretty obvious one: San Francisco

Though I do have a car I use it very rarely and rely on public transportation quite a bit. It's not perfect - trains and buses can be late or take a bit longer than expected - but I'd say it's decent. The city is also perfect for whatever socializing and shopping you're into - there really is something for everyone.

I hope you get some more answers with other interesting locations!

Best Wishes,

Many urban areas fit that description. I lived in Washington, D.C., for years, and most parts of it fit your description. I'm especially familiar with Georgetown, Dupont Circle, and Logan Circle, but I know there are areas above Georgetown as well as newly-developed areas lower down on Pennsylvania Avenue that offer all you're asking for and more. And, in the DC area, I'd also look at close-in areas in Arlington and Alexandria..
