What's the best way to promote an international referral promotion to US based realtors ?

Asked by James, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, DR Tue Oct 30, 2007

I am considering buying an ad, don't really think an email list will do it, but I wonder what realtors think is the best way to reach realtors nationwide.

HI James:

Within the United States, it is legal to referral clients to other agents, as long as the agent belongs to a Brokerage. The referral will actually go to the brokerage. The referral fee should be agreed upon before you refer the clients over. This is done quite often. My company has a Relocation director, her job is to find reliable/reputable real estate brokerages in different cities, states, countries to refer clients in and out of area.

There are also many international relocation companies that work with different real estate brokerages in various locations. Our relocation director work with them also.

Don't know if that's legal in Mexico, I guess you will have to find that out.

If you need detailed information, I can have her contact you.

You may want to team up with some of the relocation companies or market to the CRS (Certified Residential Specialists) Realtors.

Thanks Ute. We want to request that US based realtors refer their selling clients to us, in the event that the seller is aiming to move abroad, and we will pay a US level referral fee (percentage). Everything I read says it is legal so long as we follow the disclosure rules, but i will very happy to be corrected.

Hi James. I am not sure what kind of international referral promotion you are talking about. Are you thinking of referrals for purchases that are made by buyers abroad? I think you'd have to first make sure that paying referrals is legal and I guess that would depend on how it's done. Without knowing more, it's difficult to help you. The problem with e-mail lists would be that it might violate anti-spam laws. I know this is probably not the kind of help you had hoped for, but I think I'd need more detail about what's involved to be able to think about suitable ways to market it.
